Newly Dyed Black Hair Won't Take Highlights?

I just dyed my hair jet black a few hours ago, and then tonight went to put in fire red highlights. But for some reason, it didn't take to the highlights at all. The bottle says it would work on really dark hair. Is this because the hair is freshly dyed or is it because my hair is TOO dark? The black dye is permemant, the red dye is demi-permemant.

It won't take one because its black and two cause your hair just was dyed a few hours ago. If any color will work on your hair it will be blond highlights. But you will have to keep the blond dye in your hair for longer then what the box says. Another solution is to go to the hair salon and see if they can do it but most likely they can't. I had the same problem. The only thing the hair dresser could do was lighten my hair to a dark brown and put in the red highlights. Good luck

Your dyed black hair isn't the same as natural black. If you want red streaks/highlights after dying your hair black you're going to need to bleach it (not much lighter...I'd say 2 or 3 shades) and then dye it with the red...but when that fades it's going to silly....switch your temp red for permanent and if it fades and you're unhappy just black over it.

Your too wait about 2 weeks some ppl will say 6 weeks before the red color!! The red will pick up in the black hair really well!! Only use a few streaks of red because the red looks crappy after it starts to fade! good luck!!

it doesnt matter what the dye says, red highlights wont show up on black hair, especially not jet black. to get the red in you have two options:

1) bleach the strips you want to be red and then put the red color in. (this is a really pretty and dramatic look)

2) if your hair was light brown or blonde before you died it black, you can use a dry strip on the areas you want to be red, and then color them.

-both the bleach and dye strip can be found at any walgreens or something like that.
